AC Joint Pain

What is the Acromioclavicular Joint Pain?
The AC joint is short for the acromioclavicular joint. Separation of the two bones forming this joint is caused by damage to the ligaments connecting them. It is sometimes also referred to as a shoulder separation injury.

The acromioclavicular joint is formed by the outer end of the clavicle (collar bone) and the acromion process of the scapular (shoulder blade). The acromion is a bony process which protudes forwards from the upper part of the scapular. This joint forms the highest part of the shoulder.

Causes
Shoulder pain is a common symptom. Causes include:

  • Rotator cuff pathology
  • Bursitis
  • Biceps tendonitis
  • Labral tears
  • Joint pathology e.g. acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular and scapulothoracic

What Can I Do
Treatment can include one or many of the following:

Rest, Ice Therapy, Physiotherapy, Mobility and Exercise
