The shoulder is a complex structure and pain can result from many different sources including problems with the muscles, tendons and other soft tissues, and neck injury. Conditions causing shoulder pain include rotator cuff and glenohumeral disorders, acromioclavicular joint disease, arthritis and referred neck pain.
Shoulder pain is extremely common and has many possible causes including stress, work-related strain, sports that involve repetitive arm movements such as swimming and throwing, and high-impact contact sports such as football and rugby.
Treatment can include one or more of the following:
- Ice therapy
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Steroid injections
- Surgery – if symptoms persist
