
Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendonitis is a condition that causes irritation and inflammation of the large tendon in the back of the ankle, resulting in pain and swelling.
Causes
Achilles tendonitis is a common injury among athletes, and is usually caused by the tendon being pulled or stretched, resulting microscopic tearing. Other causes include poorly fitting footwear, and changes in an exercise regime, such increasing distance or exertion.
Recommended treatment
Treatment can include one or more of the following:
- Rest
- Ice Therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen
- Steroid injections
- Shoe inserts and heel lifts
- Mobility and Exercise
- Surgery (in rare cases)
